Grotesque Sans Serif fonts were the first group of faces without serifs. Distinguished by: capitals that only have a slight height to width proportional variation. Rounded letters tend to be elliptical rather than circular. Later Grotesques eg. Helvetica, have a bar and spur capital G. They are part of a major category of typefaces in which all characters are devoid of counter strokes. These faces generally have little stem thickness variation. Sans Serifs are sometimes called Lineales.
